Samsung will launch the Galaxy S9 at MWC in February. An alleged retail box of the Galaxy S9 has found its way to Reddit – ahead of launch – giving away almost the entire spec-sheet of Samsung’s next flagship phone. Not much seems to have changed and yet there are a few notable inclusions that deserve a mention. These include stereo speakers and a variable aperture rear camera. While the former will be Samsung’s first – on a flagship phone – the latter seems to have been lifted straight from the company’s recently launched W2018 flip phone.
According to the leak, the Galaxy S9 will come with a single camera sensor on the rear. It will still shoot dual-pixel 12-megapixel photos – assisted by OIS – only this time round it would apparently be faster – Samsung is using the term Super Speed dual-pixel – and offer a variable aperture. This sensor would apparently be able to shoot between f/1.5 and f/2.4 with the former assisting in low light and the latter jumping in when lighting is ideal. A similar setup is also seen in Samsung’s W2018 flip phone that was recently launched in China. The Galaxy S9, furthermore, is also said to include a Super Slo-mo mode something on the lines of what Sony offers in phones like the Xperia XZ Premium.
Elsewhere, the Galaxy S9 is also said to house stereo speakers tuned by AKG. Since the design will likely stay more or less the same as the Galaxy S8, chances are Samsung may use a setup similar to how a certain HTC U11 offers, meaning, the earpiece would double as a secondary speaker.
Some of the other hardware specs being reported include: a 5.8-inch Quad-HD+ Super AMOLED display, IP68-certification for water and dust resistance, Iris scanner, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, 8-megapixel front camera with autofocus and wireless charging. The Galaxy S9 is also said to include AKG tuned earphones in the box.
The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ will likely be incremental upgrades to the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ at least as far as design is concerned. Which means, ideally both of them should come with Samsung’s hallmark bezel-less Infinity display and an unusual aspect ratio of 18:9. One change that’s likely to make the cut in the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ is a repositioned fingerprint scanner. While in the case of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the fingerprint scanner rests in an awkward position next to the camera module, in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ it will reportedly be placed below it so that reaching out to it won’t be as frustrating.
Of all the things, Samsung had to upgrade the camera since it has been using the same setup for two years in a row now. Also stereo speakers are something that fans and critics have for long wished from a high-end Galaxy S phone. The Galaxy S9, according to the new leak, seems set to check both the boxes in the days to come.
